I'm not a developer but in my opinion, the fish need some balancing in North Carolina. You cannot catch trophy bass as fast as you can sunfish. Why have that beautiful river if fishing for other fish is pointless? The reason this is counter intuitive is because if you aren't paying to get larger nets and all that other jazz, there is no reason to fish for any other fish in North Carolina and in my eyes, that's not really intuitive at all.

Trophy Redear Sunfish are the single most effective way to level until you get to 16 and can move onto Florida. My problem isn't with the unique Redear sunfish, my problem lies with the trophies that come along with the Uniques. I COMPLETELY understand that you need to have a method to obtain gold, because earning gold can become somewhat of a challenge in this game unless you land that special unique fish, earn an achievement that gives gold or a level up (which stops) at some point. Now, the progression of leveling is great right up until you can buy crawfish cut at whatever level and start to fish for redear sunfish. Finally there is a game that simulates fishing like no other game I've encountered before. I've been fishing my entire life and I also spend a lot of time playing video games. Redear prey upon aquatic snails, which are an important link in the life cycles of certain aquatic parasites. So, I'm absolutely thrilled with this game as an avid fisherman IRL. Redear sunfish are stocked in many small ponds and fish hatcheries to control the spread of certain aquatic parasites. In recent years, the stocking of redear has found new allies due to the fish's ability to eat quagga mussels, a prominent invasive species. The specialization of this species for the deep-water, mollusk-feeding niche allows it to be introduced to lakes without the risk of competition with fish that prefer shallower water or surface-feeding.

It is even capable of opening small clams.

Redears have thick pharyngeal teeth (hard, movable plates in its throat) which allow it to crush exoskeletons. Redears are the solution to many problems in and out of the water. It is known for its diet of mollusks and snails. Since it is a popular sport fish, it has been introduced to bodies of water all over North America. The redear sunfish (Lepomis Microlophus, also known as the shell-cracker) is a freshwater fish in the Centrarchidae family and is native to the southeastern United States.
